Pressure ulcers (bed sores) are wounds caused by unrelieved pressure on the skin, most commonly occurring at the elbows, heels, hips, and over other bony prominences. Between 2% and 28% of nursing home residents have pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers are classified based on the depth of the soft tissue injury, from Stage 1 to Stage 4 (the worst).
The data from the National Nursing Home Survey conducted in 2004 found that about 159,000 nursing home residents (11%) in the United States had pressure ulcers (Stage 2 were the most common). Residents 64 and younger were more likely to have pressure ulcers than older residents. Residents of nursing homes for a year or less were more likely to suffer pressure ulcers than longer term residents. One in five residents with a recent weight loss had pressure ulcers. Only 35% of residents with Stage 2 or worse pressure ulcers received special wound care treatment in 2004.
