Louisiana Medical Malpractice Case Filed For Woman’s Death In ER

162017_132140396847214_292624_nIn October 2014, the family of a woman who died after being mistreated for a heart attack in a hospital emergency room in Louisiana filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the physician who had treated the woman in the emergency room and the hospital where the alleged medical negligence took place. The Louisiana medical malpractice lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of damages for medical expenses, lost wages and income, funeral costs, mental anguish, emotional distress, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of chance of life, loss of life, and other damages.

The woman’s family alleges in their medical malpractice case that the 49-year-old woman had gone to the defendant hospital’s emergency room on April 19, 2012, complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. The woman had a history of medical conditions that resulted in her having an increased risk of suffering a heart attack: obesity, hypertension, smoking, a family history of coronary heart disease, fatigue, and a sedentary lifestyle. The emergency room medical staff examined the woman upon her arrival and administered an EKG that allegedly was interpreted as being consistent with the woman suffering a heart attack, yet she was not placed on a heart monitor and she was not placed in a treatment room but rather she was sent back to the waiting room. Later, the woman collapsed while in the waiting room.

The family alleges in their malpractice lawsuit that the defendant physician was the woman’s treating physician and that he failed to examine the woman after the results of the EKG were known and that he further failed to consult with a cardiologist about the woman’s condition and treatment. The plaintiffs further allege that once the woman’s true medical condition became known, the woman received improper medical treatment that included being given improper medications. The woman died within one hour after collapsing in the waiting room.

The defendant hospital states on its website: “Our motto is Our Family, Caring for Your Family. It’s what we stand for and it’s what our hospital care is all about … we take pride in our quality and service. As the largest and most comprehensive full service medical facility on the Westbank, we are proud to offer an array of award-winning, full service inpatient and outpatient services.”
