Hospital’s Delay In Treating 12-Year-Old Led To Leg Amputation: The parents of a 12-year-old New Mexico girl has filed a New Mexico medical malpractice lawsuit against a local hospital alleging that the 10-hour delay in treating her resulted in the need to amputate her leg.
The child had fallen and suffered an injury to her leg while at school: “I was freaking out like a lot because I couldn’t really like move my leg, and I was scared that it was broken, which it was.” She was transported to Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where an x-ray of her leg was taken. According to her parents’ New Mexico medical malpractice lawsuit, the child was then not seen again for ten hours despite her mother advising the medical staff on several occasions that her daughter’s leg was becoming cold. The mother stated, “The guy finally said that, he started panicking because he realized that her leg was cold, and she was screaming so crazy that, he’s like, ‘we gotta get her transported to UNM’.”
At UNMH, a pediatric surgeon determined that the child’s left leg would have to be amputated. She was required to have more than four surgeries and she spent more than three months in the hospital.
The parents’ New Mexico medical malpractice lawsuit alleges that the need for an amputation was entirely avoidable had the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital provided timely and appropriate medical care.
The parents medical malpractice lawyer stated after filing the lawsuit, “We’re gonna find out exactly why this happened and hopefully prevent something like this from happening to anyone else ever again.” Presbyterian Hospital alleged that it did not have sufficient information to either admit or deny the allegations against it: “Presbyterian was recently served with the complaint, and we will reserve comment on pending litigation for the appropriate venue.”
Presbyterian Hospital states on its website: “Presbyterian Hospital is a 453-bed acute care hospital — the largest in New Mexico — and provides a full range of medical and surgical healthcare services. Located in the center of Albuquerque, it is part of the not-for-profit Presbyterian Healthcare Services, and is dedicated to the health of its patients, members, and communities … Presbyterian Hospital is dedicated to the care of its patients and community. With convenient medical facilities, including specialized centers for heart health, women’s health, and children’s health, Presbyterian Hospital is New Mexico’s flagship medical facility – with the comfort and care you’d expect from a neighborhood hospital.”
