$100K Maryland Bed Bug Verdict

162017_132140396847214_292624_nA Maryland jury recently returned a verdict in the amount of $100,000 in favor of a woman who spent a night in a Maryland hotel after which she awoke to find swollen welts over her arms and hands as a result of bed bug bites. After a two-day trial, the jury returned its verdict on September 15, 2015 after less than one hour of deliberations.

The plaintiff’s attorneys focused at trial on the defendant hotel’s failure to follow its own policies regarding bed bug infestation and control. Unbeknownst to the plaintiff, the same room that she stayed in was placed “out of order” only a few weeks before her stay due to a bed bug infestation but the hotel failed to call in a pest control expert at that time, allowing the bed bugs to multiply and engage in their disgusting behaviors.

The plaintiff presented evidence during trial that bed bugs are highly mobile and can be spread from room to room by housekeeping or by other guests. Bed bugs are experts at hiding, often secreting themselves in walls, ceilings, and other hard-to-spot areas that allow them to travel through walls or ceilings from room to room. Once a bed bug infestation occurs, it is imperative that a qualified and experienced bed bug pest control contractor be called in to professionally and adequately treat the infected areas as well as adjacent areas.
